Monumentet i röd granit – vångagranit från Sverige – är ett av Siverts mest internationellt uppmärksammade offentliga verk. Det förenar en monumental, geometrisk form med symboliska element som knyter an till Alfred Nobels betydande arv och Nobelprisets internationella karaktär.
Varje år tillförs monumentet namnen på de amerikanska Nobelpristagarna. Ett av de mest oväntade namnen är Bob Dylan, som tilldelades Nobelpriset i litteratur 2016. Svenska Akademien motiverade utmärkelsen med orden: ”för att ha skapat nya poetiska uttryck inom den stora amerikanska sångtraditionen.”
Minnesstenen utformades enligt Siverts instruktioner i Skånska Granits lokaler. Monumentet är 4,5 meter högt och väger 14 ton.
Eftersom det förväntas tillkomma fler amerikanska Nobelpristagare i framtiden har Sivert, tillsammans med Ulf Lorensson, tagit fram en vision för hur minnesplatsen skulle kunna utvecklas med flera liknande minnesstenar. I bildspelet visas skisser samt en 3D-rendering, framtagen av Ulf, som illustrerar den tänkta placeringen och utformningen.
The Nobel Monument was erected in 2003 as a joint project initiated and overseen by the Consulate General of Sweden and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to honor all American Nobel Laureates and Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize. It is the only Monument in New York City parks that features the names of living persons. Every year, the names of the American Nobel Laureates from the previous year are inscribed onto the Monument and unveiled at an annual ceremony.
The Nobel Monument Dedication Ceremony took place on October 14, 2003 in the presence of Mayer of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg, Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden Margareta Winberg, H.R.H. Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Consul General of Sweden Olle Wästberg, Science Advisor to President Bush and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Dr. John Marburger III, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel and the designer of the Monument Sivert Lindblom.
