In connection with Blasieholmstorg receiving its new aesthetic design in 1989, Sivert, a few years later, also designed the street lighting fixtures that hang on the facades along both sides of Arsenalgatan. The fixtures were developed on behalf of a group of property owners who, in collaboration, had decided to upgrade and beautify the streetscape. The result was spectacular lighting that is perceived as both modern and well-balanced in relation to the more classical expression of the facades' design language.
The fixture Sivert designed can be likened to a series of outstretched arms – "light-bearers along the parade street" – extending their globes of light over pedestrians and traffic. The extension of the light fixtures from the facades out over the street space creates associations with both the Greek, Olympic tradition and the Roman, more majestic architecture. In this way, the thoroughfare's character as a valuable passage is enhanced, and an elegant and distinctive spatial experience is created, which is evident both in daylight and in the evening's illumination.
Arsenalsgatan
Arsenalsgatan is a street in Norrmalm in central Stockholm. The street begins at Raoul Wallenbergs torg and Berzelii park and extends to Kungsträdgårdsgatan. Previously, Arsenalsgatan also continued through Kungsträdgården, where a roadway separated Karl XII torg from the rest of the park. The street then reached all the way to Gustav Adolfs torg, but that part today has other street addresses.
History
Arsenalsgatan received its current name in 1857. During the 1740s, it was called Arsenals- or Södra Trädgårdsgatan, and in 1807 the name Arsenalsgatan appears. The name originates from Arsenalen, a theatre building that Gustav III had housed in the de la Gardieska palatset, also called Makalös, by Norrström. The designation Södra Trädgårdsgatan referred to the street's location next to Kungsträdgården.
Since 1870, the gentlemen's club Stora Sällskapet has been located at the corner of Blasieholmstorg and Arsenalsgatan 7.
In connection with the 1946 city plan, Arsenalsgatan was discussed as a possible endpoint for a car tunnel from Tegelbacken, but the proposal was never implemented. After the so-called Almstriden in 1971, Kungsträdgården's easternmost subway entrance needed to be moved. It was therefore relocated to a private property at Arsenalsgatan 10 and opened in October 1977.
